Crypto Recovery Case Study - Full Recovery - UK Celebrity (Paul)

The Redefind team have been actively helping victims of crypto theft. One of these individuals was delighted to have recovered all of their stolen crypto from a social engineering theft event. Here is his story, which he is happy to share publicly.

The Story

The individual (a British celebrity who has asked to remain anonymous, referred to in this article as ‘Paul’) was contacted by an investment company to join their crypto trading platform, which was delivering attractive (but not unrealistic) returns. Redefind founder, Richard, is a friend of Paul’s, and advised that this opportunity was most likely a ‘backdoor scam’. Unfortunately, Paul was making what seemed to be a good return on investment at the time from this platform, and didn’t take this warning seriously.

Over the following 6 months, Paul would invest more into the platform, until he seemingly booked a trade in error that couldn’t be reversed. This ‘error’ asked Paul to transfer several hundred thousand pounds to settle the error/margin call—which made him nervous. Discussing this unusual request in passing with Richard, he was advised that it was a scam. Paul asked for his money back from the investment company, but was ignored.

The Recovery

Over the next few weeks, we helped Paul every step of the way: reporting the theft to police and connecting him with a forensic investigator on the Redefind professional services panel, who traced the assets to a number of exchanges. Our team worked closely with Paul’s lawyer and, in a little over a month, Paul had received all of his original investment back (a £47,000 recovery), returned from the crypto exchanges that his stolen funds were sent to. Paul received his assets back in April 2024. The money he never received was his ‘profit’ from the fake trading platform (which never existed anyway!).
